Incredible rare, Oso is a short-eared dog (Atelocynus microtis) who was trapped by hunters as a baby and raised in captivity for the first year of his life. He was then rescued by biologists interested in releasing him back into the wild. To re-adapt him to the forest and ensure he would survive once free, we walked him on a leash in the forest for almost three years. During these walks, we learned many things about short-eared dog biology. One of the most surprising was that he can roar when scared. Oso was released in October 2010 and now lives free some 50 km north of the Los Amigos Biological Station, where he was released.
