The American Bison became nearly extinct with about 2 dozen Bison left in 1904 due to excessive hunting. YNP bison comprises the nation's largest bison population on public land and one of the few herds that have not been hybridized through interbreeding with cattle. Today there are thousands of animals in the Yellowstone region.
