The state of Rio Grande do Norte is almost completely inserted into the caatinga biome. This study presents a bird inventory of thirteen areas of caatinga in Rio Grande do Norte. Information was collected at coastal caatinga and in the centre of the state between 1998 and 2012. To complement these lists, a compilation of bibliographic and ornithological collections’ data was carried out. We recorded a total of 262 bird species, with richness varying among sites between 82-171 species. Among these species there are four threatened taxa: Penelope jacucaca, Picumnus limae, Herpsilochmus pectoralis and Sporagra yarrellii. The data show that the recorded bird richness of analyzed areas is similar to other caatinga’s priority areas for conservation, hence supporting more efforts towards their conservation.
