They are apex predators that have a preference for larger prey. Their food preference is quite wide, and it includes about eighty-seven species of animals. The reason why jaguars are a keystone species is due to their diverse diet.

The jaguar is in danger of extinction mainly by the loss of its natural habitat in favor of man. This causes that it loses the possibility of feeding itself of its main preys and of reproducing itself.
