We continue showing pictures from our most recent trip to the Caatinga site in Paraiba State. Here we have a crab-eating raccoon, very close to one of our camera traps. An opportunistic omnivore, the crab-eating raccoon is distributed throughout South America and in Southeastern Central America as well. It does not seem to be as common as its cousin the Northern Raccoon (Procyon lotor) from North and Central America. This species is nocturnal, and active at the ground level. It is a solitary animal as well.
