Bill deformities are commonly found in domestic birds, but different forms of beak malformations have been recorded in wild birds as well. This abnormality may be caused by traumas or congenital factors, and a scissor beak is among known bill malformations. Severe anomalies may impair basic physiological needs, sometimes leading to death. One individual of Red-brested Toucan was seen with a scissor beak in Southernmost Brazil, but it's condition did not seem to have negative effects to the bird. The cause of it's condition could not be verified, but it is speculated that it could be a congenital characteristic. This is the first known record of a scissor beak to this species.
